A few years ago I attended an actors workshop at Bizbooks here in Vancouver. It’s was so long ago, I can’t remember who the speaker was but I will never forget one thing that she said that night that applies to all creative’s and not just actors. She said, “ if you’re not getting any opportunities from other people then create your own opportunities”. Another way of putting it would be if you aren’t attracting work then create your own. I’m sure many people in the creative field would agree with this idea and to me it makes perfect sense.
And thus, we segue into today’s blog entry. Just before Halloween, I was not getting much work or creating music or films for myself which was ironic as after Halloween all hell broke loose and I had to turn opportunities away! Anyway, I was thinking about Halloween and that I should create something just for fun. So I decided to roam around the internet and see what I might stumble upon. Low and behold I found – The Metamorphosis of a Vampire by Charles Boudelaire, French poet 1821 – 1867 who just happened to translate the works of Edgar Allan Poe. A match made in heaven!
I decided that I would create a video from the poem using only stills and video clips I found online and then record some actors performing the voiceover and then top it all off with original music and sound by yours truly.
In the poem there are two characters, the victim and vampire. So the first step was decide whom to cast. I thought I could do a pretty good job as the victim and I asked my friend Kira, of Firebelly Productions (shameless plug)

to play the part of the vampire.

By the way, as far as I know Kira is not a vampire although it’s been a long time since I have met up with her in the daylight. Not to mention the last time we went to midnight mass and she leaned over and whispered, “ it burns us! “ Which I’m sure was just a coincidence because there really aren’t creatures like vampires in this world, right?

Anyway, Kira came over one night (hmmm?) and nailed her part on the tenth try! Just kidding, Kira really did nail it on the first take but we did a few more for variety and safety. I recorded my bit and then I began to scour the internet for images and video.
I have very strong feelings and ethics in terms of ownership of intellectual property and naturally I only searched for and used clips and images that I could confirm were in the public domain and fair use. There is a plethora of fair use material out there and all one needs to do is annotate and credit the author.
So as I mentioned earlier all hell broke loose at the end of 2014 and I got too busy to work on “ The Metamorphosis of a Vampire “. However this month I had the time and here is the result,

Here we are in 2015 all warm and cozy sitting by the fire laid back, sipping gin and juice! Ok maybe not me but I’ll bet that what’s Snoop Dog is doing right now! By the way, this blog will not be about Snoop Dog and in fact it’s kind of polar opposite to what his music is all about.

I’m sure you are aware by now that I like composing music for film and video. But did you also know I write music to meditate by? Well it’s true. Most of my compositions have been commissioned by Dr, Jonni Gray,

http://www.drjonnigray.com/

and she guides the mediation and I write the accompanying music. Together we have created the equivalent of 13 cd’s and I only say equivalent because Jonni sells downloads now instead of cd’s.

I love writing this style of music. One reason is that I am a meditator and writing this music just comes naturally to me and I know what works and what doesn’t. The other reason is that I know that my music is being used in a spiritual and helpful way. My music is helping others relax and enter a state where visualization occurs and many problems can be solved among other things. I’d like to do more of this kind of thing – helping others with my music and sound and I’m looking into sound therapy and healing.

Anyway, I’ve put together a video with some samples of guided meditation music I have composed. I hope you like it and pass it on to anyone you think might like it or might be looking for original music for their own project/ practice. And if you happen to bump into Snoop, by all means send him my regards.
