Burqa Success

Last week’s premiere of ” The Story of Burqa ” was a resounding success. The 700 seat Granville 7 sold out and at least 75 % of the audience stayed for the Q & A. The film was such a success that a second screening was added sunday. Lots of positive comments and it has really generated a media and audience buzz. More Q & A for me this week as the director and I have been invited to Emily Carr University to discuss the film with film program students. Should be fun.
And in other news, I’m still writing the Bravofact proposal for a short animation. writing the new script for a 30 minute doc and writing a feature film comedy.
Oh yes and just got word that I will be the sound designer and audio consultant on ” Fiddler on the Roof ” this fall at the Gateway theatre.

Three days until ” The Story of Burqa ” premieres at the Doxa Film Festival. Very exciting times and the director Brishkay Ahmed has asked me to be in the Q and A after the screening. And being the fame whore that I am I quickly said yes!! Lots and lots of media interest and buzz and put up any relevant links when they arise.
Just finished going over ” Interface ” my latest feature film script for any spelling and formatting errors and she is good to go. Now where did I put Cronenberg’s card?
I’ve also been writing some music on my own just for the pleasure of it and as a friend said – it has a Sigor Ros feel to it. I agree and why the hell not. They are the most original and talented creatives coming out of Iceland these days and they are heads above of most of the shite that passes for popular music these days. But I’m not subjective about these things. Right then – off I go.

Fame

This week’s big news is that the ” Burqa ” doc is getting some great publicity and I get to be a part of it. So far this week I have been interviewed by CITR and Schema Magazine. Such good fun and I have to say that I love the limelight and I may even be a whore of fame! I guess when one spends most of one’s time as a composer all alone – that it’s only natural to want to bask in the glow of media attention. The reviews of the film thus far have been quite good and I hope that all this attention translates into more contracts down the road.

Ever have one of those days when all you want to do is be understood and help people and for all your good intentions all that you end up doing is pissing people off! Yes well today is one of those days. ha ha
It started out so well and I was energized and ready to take on the world and wham bam in the space of 5 minutes I had pressed many many buttons. I’m innocent I tell you!!! Oh well, I have had enough of these days in my life that I know ” this too shall pass! ” And if you are going to live your life with honesty then you must expect resistance as the world has been conned into thinking it’s normal to be dishonest.

In other creative news, I had a great session in my favorite tea shop yesterday getting to the bare bones of a documentary that I have poked at over the years but which has never really gotten off the ground. I finally realized that it was too vague a concept and because of this I didn’t believe in it. And therefore, If the writer/ director doesn’t believe in it then who else will? Sounds logical and simple but when you’re in your own head thinking about your own project – you need to get to the heart of the story and really know why you want to make the film. In recent years I have let the opinions of others affect my decisions way too much. I think you have to follow your heart of believe in what you gut is saying. It’s good to listen to advice but you have to know when to take it and when to throw it away.

CUTS

What I really want to hear is more and more film directors screaming ” CUT! ” Since that would mean a healthy film industry. But No! It’s the Canadian government cut. cut, cutting the cultural life out of this country. First the Gaming commission funding, then the CBC and now the NFB – which is being so harshly cut that the offices in Toronto and Montreal will close down.
What did I expect when this country is run by a sociopath? We all knew that he was going to rid Canada of any artistic expression that he deemed objectionable. Which is everything except re-runs of Anne of Green Gables.
In a way, I feel sorry for the guy. The backlash from all of these cuts and more to come will mean a thriving gorilla cultural scene and then the rest of the world will be interested in Canada again.

April Showers

This is a busy month and very diverse. Producing a singer song writer, getting a proposal ready for Bravo, one for the BC Arts Council, revamping the paranormal doc, shooting for my next short film, writing a comedy feature and the initial brainstorming session for the rainforest circus happens at the end of the month.
I fair bit on my plate and I know I’ve left a few things out but it’s doable. Also waiting on news about a show I pitched to The Nature of Things and a radio play I pitched to a station in the US. More later…

Burqa doc in the can

Great session at Rukkus House last week and did the final audio mix for ” The Story of Burqa ” . I posted two new mp3 tracks called oud song one and five. Just a small sampling of the very diverse music in this film. I’ll let you know when you can see it and where.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Final sound mix of the Burqa doc in less than a week and one reel to go. Everything is looking and sounding great and I should be done the sound design and score in a day or two. This film is going to do very well and I can see it rocking the festival circuit. Now I need to find something to do next – in a paid sense since my own projects could occupy my time for years to come and they will!!!

February 29th today – now that’s weird! Perhaps something very unusual will happen today.

Feverishly working on the sound and music for the Burqa doc as the final mix happens in less than 2 weeks. It’s going very well though and feel confident that there is lots of time and no need for any all-nighters.
I know that it’s been making the rounds on facebook but wanted to repost here as well. Great quote by Will Smith and it really sums up how I feel right now.

A new hat

So this week I continue on with composing and sound designing the doc and put on a new hat as music producer. I’m currently arranging and building the bed tracks for a singer songwriter that we hope will result in some factor money. She has a great voice and some good musical ideas and the sound we are trying to achieve is portishead like.

First 4 reels of the doc are done and I’m trying to get it done by the end of february for the final mix at a local post house. Should get to the finish line on time.
